8 Movies You Need to Catch This Summer

Whether at the Regal Theater in Fenway or AMC Loews at the Common, this summer’s list of must-sees is anything but short. After the success of “Wonder Woman” and the excitement over the new “Star Wars” movie coming out in the fall, this summer’s hits could very easily slip through moviegoers’ fingers — so here’s our list on which movies to definitely catch at the cinemas in the next few months.

1) The Big Sick

Silicon Valley‘s own Kumail Nanjiani will star in this movie about an inter-cultural couple and the challenges they face. Having already received praise from critics and a whopping 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, make sure you catch this sure-to-be hit when it comes out in Mid-July.

2) Dunkirk

This WWII Christopher Nolan movie has both historians, war junkies and preteens excited for its release — and why? Because One Direction’s very own Harry Styles will be acting in this movie alongside big names like Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy. With a score provided by Hans Zimmer (or, better known as the composer of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” soundtrack), this movie has the potential to become the British equivalent of the blockbuster, “American Sniper”.

3) Atomic Blonde

Wonder Woman has nothing on Lorraine Broughton, the protagonist and resident blondie of the film “Atomic Blonde.” As a spy sent to Berlin in a post-Cold War world, Lorraine Broughton may become the feminine anti-hero we’ve been waiting for in all her kick-ass, espionage glory (although you’ll have to wait until late July to see this action film).

4) Detroit

Based on the very real 1967 Detroit riots, this film is about the peak of America’s racism that manifested during the Civil Rights Movement. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (director of “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty”), this movie boasts an impressive cast that includes John Boyega, Will Poulter and John Krasinski and will come out in August.

5) The Beguiled

Remakes are historically known for being terrible (especially remakes of a 1970s sexy Civil War movie and book, which is what “The Beguiled” is), but writer and director Sofia Coppola became only the second woman ever to receive the “Best Director” award at the Cannes festival for this film, so we can bet that this movie blows its original out of the water.

Starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst, this movie is being brought to the American Big Screen in late-June.

6) Colossal

So…we’re still not quite sure what this movie is about. All we know is that it involves a giant monster that protagonist Anne Hathaway somehow controls, and that it received praise from sci-fi critics all around for a decently low budget. Regardless, this film is certainly unlike any you’ve seen before it, so make sure to add this to your rainy day movie list this summer.

7) The Hitman’s Bodyguard

This action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel Jackson and Gary Oldman that comes out in late August has the potential to be one of the funniest movies of the year. We know that Ryan Reynolds does well in action-comedies (think: “Deadpool”), so pairing him with the hilarious tough-guy Samuel Jackson in a political, assassin movie may just be the comedy highlight of the summer.

8) It

This film, based off the award-winning Stephen King novel, is by far the most anticipated film of the year. Not only is this novel super iconic with a huge cult following, but it’s been in production since 2009, so the writers, directors and producers have had a lot of time since them to make it perfect. This film comes out in early September, making it the perfect movie to end your summer (and start your fall!) off with.
