The Greek Restaurant That’s Heating Up Newbury St.

One can truly say that Boston is a food city, what with the number of available Boston restaurants growing every day. But how many authentic Greek places within the city can you name? More so, how many are quick enough for a lunch break, while still serving food fresh?

Well lucky for us, Boston has a new counter-service Greek eatery that has solved both of these problems.

Boston Restaurants on Newbury: The New Kid on the Block

Opened just a few months ago in February 2017, Gre.Co is Newbury St.’s newest Greek restaurant that’s changing the game. The eatery prides itself in serving fresh, locally sourced food- whether it’s meat for your gyro carved off the spit, or vegetables grown on a nearby farm. Gre.Co also promises fast service, but the hordes of customers lining up to give their delectable offerings a try means you might not get in immediately. However, the crowds also show how worth it the food is!

At Gre.Co you can either choose a classic dish or build your own. If you choose the latter, you can get a pita, salad or plate and fill it with a meat of your choice (or veggies, for the vegans and vegetarians in the crowd). Finish it off with a traditional Greek topping made in-store, whether you choose the spicy whipped feta that’s hailed as the best of its kind or the classic Tzatziki. If you chose a plate, you also get to choose a side; Zucchini chips are Gre.Co’s specialty.

You don’t have to go custom though; Gre.Co’s classic gyros are absolute perfection. Each one contains thin-sliced meats with tomatoes, onions, and hand-cut potatoes. They have the standard varieties like pork, lamb and chicken, but you should also try the Loukaniko (pork and leek sausage), Bifteki (ground beef), and Classic Veggie (featuring seasonal squash fritter). The restaurant also serves three different kinds of fresh Greek salads.

Come for the Gyros, Stay for the Loukoumades

If you come for the gyros, we highly recommend you stay for the Loukoumades; traditional Greek street food doughnuts. The spherical delights are served in five different ways (including with Oreos and hazelnut praline—yum), or you can make your own with any of their toppings. Complement your meal and dessert with one of Gre.Co’s Greek drinks, like the ouzo flavored soda.

The new eatery is already receiving hundreds of five-star reviews and praises from Bostonians and tourists alike. This spot has become a favorite for business people looking for Boston restaurants on lunch breaks especially. If you’re lucky enough to nab a spot inside, you can enjoy the bright, cozy restaurant with its blue and white decor. Traditional Greek ingredients and the restaurant’s own plush mascot are also available for sale.

Can’t make it for a full visit, or just crunched for time? Worry not! Gre.Co has their own app called Greco To Go. Powered by ChowNow, the app lets you place an order to be prepared immediately, or for a later pick up.

If you’re looking for a new grab-and-go lunch spot, or simply crave authentic Greek cuisine, Gre.Co is the place to be. The venue at 225 Newbury St. is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
