From interviewing celebrities to managing her own website, Courtney Kaner is a driven journalism student ready to accomplish her dreams.

Describe your professions, program at Emerson, and what you would like to do going forward.

I am studying journalism at Emerson College. So far it is a lot of understanding the basics of journalism and a lot of learning about the different platforms used in today’s media, since the majority of news and other information is mainly online. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of WEBN Boston, which is a small news organization. I’ve had the opportunity to connect with and interview some pretty big names in the entertainment industry. I was so excited that I got to interview one of my idols Bianca De La Garza, also an Emerson alum. It’s opened my eyes to truly see what I want to do and where I want to be in the future. I am definitely interested in pursuing a career in the beauty and fashion industry. I’d love to write for an online publication or even make a career out of my own blog.

Tell us more about your YouTube videos, Navy and Lace, and courtneykaner.com.

I started navy and lace the fall of my senior year in high school. I was really inspired by other fashion bloggers and thought why couldn’t I do that too. It grew into my website, www.courtneykaner.com, which was so exciting for me. A few months later I started working with YouTube and created my beauty and fashion channel, also connected to my blog. I love watching other beauty gurus on YouTube and really felt it would be an awesome addition to my blog and a way to understand the world of YouTube! Both my website and channel are connected via links and posted videos! The whole process has been challenging but also very rewarding! I am able to share my love of beauty and fashion, while creating something that could hopefully be a career for me in the future.

What is your biggest motivation in life?

I am a very self-motivated person, but I would definitely say one thing that motivates me is making my parents proud! They are already very proud of me, but I always want to do things and excel not only for myself but for them. I want to be that girl in the future who can take their parents on luxurious vacations or buy them a new home. Success is definitely in the books, but seeing my parents’ reactions at some of my proudest moments is priceless and is truly what makes me want to push forward!

What’s your opinion on friendship, family, and relationships?

Relationships are extremely important, but I am a firm believer that family is everything. They are the ones who will be there through thick and thin. “Friends come and go but family is forever.” As cliché as that may sound it is so true! I’ve struggled with friendships in the past, and have appreciated my family even more through every struggle. They are always the ones who will continue to support and love you.
