Jeremy Spindler – Who Can Make Your Life Sweeter

Jeremy first came to Boston for his passion for music, but maple syrup is the real reason to keep him in the New England.

“I love the taste of real maple, which I never had until I moved to New England.”

Can you tell me about your background?

I came to Boston 10 years ago to get my Ph.D. in Music Theory and Composition.  I graduate into a pretty dismal job market, and after two years searching for an academic job I quit and decided to turn a hobby into a career.  So, I started Spindler Confections out of my home in Somerville.

When and why did you start Spindler Confections?

The business started in June of 2012 as a side hobby while working in administration.  I have been making candy since I was a kid, and have always loved it.  I started out just doing a couple farmers markets, and it has grown from there.

Why Spindler Confections insisted in using no preservatives and local ingredients?

Firstly, I do need to clarify that I use both conventional ingredients and local ingredients.  I use local products when possible and avoid all artificial flavorings, colorings, high fructose corn syrup, and preservatives simply because it tastes better, and that’s what customers want.

What is your vision for Spindler Confections?

Right now, I just want to get the new shop up and running and do my best to make it successful.  I want to expand wholesaling and online sales, but at the same time I want to keep it a small specialty business.

Can you tell us the most difficult and the most interesting part of making candies?

The most difficult part is the labor.  There is a lot of stirring, cutting, wrapping, and packaging, and it takes a toll on the hands and wrists after a while.

The most interesting part is how the tiniest change in the recipe, temperature, or process can result in dramatically different results.

Can you tell us what is your favorite flavor?

Salted Maple Caramel.  It’s a bit richer than the other flavors, and I love the taste of real maple, which I never had until I moved to New England.

Who/what was inspired you to become the person you are today?

My family & my husband.

What are your passions in life?

Great food, great movies, hiking (particularly in the National Parks), and relaxing in Vermont with a cup of hot apple cider in hand.

What does Boston mean to you?

It’s HOME, even though I am an “import.”
