Six years ago, Kay Mcgowan created a concept that really can be called “out of this world.” Her professional back-ground, melded with her affection for travel, people, and unique cultures propelled her to create A Curated World. In essence, A Curated World is “a combination of video storytelling and magazine-style editorial” fused with commerce. The site also features a travel log which details firsthand accounts of Kay’s exotic adventures as she quests for authentic and one-of-a-kind items. Culture aficionados and shoppers rejoice: Kay is also thrilled to announce the opening of A Curated World’s first store location in Somerville, where shoppers can finally explore Kay’s imported treasures face to face.
The site also enables shoppers to “Shop Real Time” with Kay as she frequents the markets and bazaars of the world’s most exotic cities. Shop Real Time enables viewers to discover treasures with Kay, thus elevating the shopping experience to an experience of adventure and discovery. Culture aficionados and shoppers rejoice: Kay is also thrilled to announce the opening of A Curated World’s first store location in Somerville, where shoppers can finally explore Kay’s imported treasures face to face.
In terms of selecting the one-of-a-kind objects for her site, Kay is looking for “the hand of the artisan,” items crafted with exclusivity and care. In 2010, Kay’s concept was a refreshing focus away from the trendsetters and on the authenticity and culture behind an item as the “whole concept of transparency in the art world that is becoming more mainstream today was really on the cusp.”
We wanted to know the inspiration behind Kay’s eye for the beautiful and exotic, and she told us tales of her travels in her youth. Kay is a true explorer, and fearless in her travels. When she was in her second year of college, she put her studies aside to travel to New Zealand all by her lonesome self, where she stayed in a seven-story hostel and dominated the pool table on a daily basis-just like the heroine of an independent drama. Kay insists traveling alone at a young age gave her a new level of confidence. Her journey to New Zealand taught her that “you can travel half way across the world and be fine.” Do you mind passing a little bit of that courage this way, Kay?
Upon completing her degree, fate swiftly led Kay to Kevin McPherson, founder of Mohr & Mcpherson, importers of home furniture from across the world. It’s safe to say Mr. McPherson saw something in Kay, as he pledged to her upon meeting her that he would “teach her everything she needs to know about this business.” Kay spent fourteen years at Mohr & Mcpherson, promptly earning Kevin’s respect as their relationship shifted from mentor to solidified business partners. After almost a decade and a half at Mohr & Mcpherson, Kay felt it was time to venture on her own and start bringing her own vision to life-a virtual world where traveling and cultural exploration is synonymous with the shopping experience.
Six years later, A Curated World is going stronger than ever, with its first-ever store location an exciting addition to Davis Square. “What I loved so much about my job and my own personal travel was meeting people and talking to people.” It shows in the treasures you bring back to us, Kay.
