It’s that time of year again. The world’s most talented sand artists have set up shop along Revere Beach, and are working on incredible works of art to stun and impress visitors. However, they’re also competing for something else; over $40,000 of cash prizes! The annual Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Competition is back for it’s fourteenth year, from July 21-23. Here’s everything you need to know about the event and how the Revere Beach sand sculptures come about.
An International Affair

It’s not called an international festival for nothing. Hailed as one of the three largest sand sculpting festivals, the Revere Beach competition attracts the best sand artists from all over the world. The hefty cash prizes are certainly a motivator, but these artists are competing for recognition too.
The world-class artists aren’t the only thing making the Revere Beach Sand Sculpting Festival such a big deal. This event is expected to draw in close to one million attendees, making it one of the largest Boston events of the summer. Thus, it is a big deal for the tourism industry and Revere Beach as well.

Although the event doesn’t start until Friday, artists have been working since Wednesday to create extraordinary sculptures. The sand was brought down to the sidewalk along Revere Beach Boulevard by the truck load; 400 tons to be exact. They will get to keep working on their art until the competition officially concludes at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
While they do have tools at their disposal and water piped in to help keep the material workable, the artists do not get to use anything but sand in their designs. This poses a challenge, but also leads to incredible feats as these sculptors create immense and ornate designs.
The central theme for this years competition hearkens back to the Sail Boston festival earlier this year, and will center around Tall Ships and the USS Constitution. Artists will work together to construct a large model of the iconic Bostonian ship, along with a lighthouse and other themed sculptures.

The works of the artists are absolutely incredible, but that’s not all that the International Sand Sculpture Festival is about. Live music will be happening all weekend. Bands scheduled include Richie Rich and the 24 Karat Funk, Smokin’ Joe and the Henchmen and the World Premiere Band. Additionally, there will be street performers, a food truck festival, and even a fireworks display at 9 p.m. on Saturday.
The best part? amusement rides will be on site, including a merry-go-round, a Ferris wheel and even a kiddie coaster. Hot air balloon rides are a new addition to the Revere Beach Sand Sculptures Festival this year.
Where to Go, and How

The festival is going to stretch along the Revere Beach Boulevard sidewalk, from the William G. Reinstein bandstand to the Markey foot bridge. Artists will be set up all along the way, so be sure to walk the full expanse.
Unfortunately, the crowd of hundreds of thousands is certainly going to make transportation difficult. The best way to get to the festival is to take the T in to the Wonderland or Revere Beach stop, which are both right across the street from the event. However, if you are driving, parking will be available at the Wonderland Greyhound Track and Suffolk Downs.
